According to the World Bank, the world's daily waste production is 0.74 kilograms per person. The organization's experts point out that considering the fast population growth and urbanization, annual waste production will increase up to 3.40 billion tons in 2050.
However, waste conversion technologies have been rapidly developing, thus providing an opportunity to use waste in a more efficient way. Waste to energy production is one of such use areas.
Russia has already joined this process. In May 2020, three public corporations planned to build at least 25 new waste-to-energy plants in Russian regions. The capacity of the new plants may reach 1.5 GW. Five plants under construction and the new waste fired power plants will be able to process approximately 18 million tons of waste, or 15–20% of the country's total waste volume.
In addition, different projects in the area of landfill gas use are being implemented at various stages in Russia. Other innovative WtE solutions are being introduced as well.
